Chapter Six
March, 1925.
Cora deserved Aliceâs full attention: she was holding up really well to being teased tonight.
Sometimes she didnât. Sometimes she let her temper or her desire get the better of her, and she ended up snapping at Alice, or trying to take a liberty, and Alice had to put her in check. And after a whole week in Chicago, miles and miles away, well, it was anybodyâs guess how well Cora would handle the way Alice was currently tracing her fingertips over her face, over her chin, cheeks, and lips. Tracing so lightly that she was barely touching her. Coraâs eyelids fluttered, and her pulse beat hard at her throat, but she was putting up with it.
Alice knew that, when she was in the mood, Cora loved this more than anything else: the promise of future delights. Just so long as the future was immediate, and the tease wasnât just a tease. She seemed unused to tenderness or subtlety, and watching her respond to soft, measured caresses was sort of like watching a lion close its eyes when a tamer petted it at the circus.
But Alice, sitting on her dressing table, felt like living dangerously tonight. She leaned in, kissing Cora just beneath her left eye. Cora sighed softly, and then hissed when Alice began to trail feather-light kisses down her cheek to her jaw.
âDid you miss me?â Alice whispered against her skin. âDid you think about me a lot?â
âNot a whit,â Cora said breathlessly.
âI thought about you. It was strange not having you in the audience. I can always tell when youâre there.â
Cora swallowed audibly. âCan you?â
âUh-huh.â Alice nipped at her jaw. âNobody looks at me like you do.â
âSee that they donât.â Cora put her hand on Aliceâs hip again. âI brought you something from my trip.â
Alice pulled back. âYou did?â she asked uneasily. Cora knew Alice didnât like too many elaborate presents. Sheâd made it clear from the start she wasnât anybodyâs plaything.
âNothing too expensive,â Cora said smoothly, keeping her hand on Aliceâs hip. âJust somethingâ¦exquisite. It made me think of you.â
ââExquisite,â huh?â That sure sounded intriguing. âWhat is it?â
âIâll show it to you later.â Cora looked at Alice with a hooded gaze. âAt our hotel suite.â She tapped Aliceâs hip expectantly with the tip of one finger.
Alice pretended to consider it, although sheâd decided to spend the night with Cora the moment sheâd said goodnight to Lou. âI guess. If you think you can show me a good time.â
Coraâs eyes gleamed in triumph, and with something a little more savage too. Now that she had an invitation, she leaned in and began to kiss Alice beneath her ear. Alice shivered as her whole body warmed right up. Her relationship with Cora was a two-way street. Alice could only pretend to be indifferent for so long, and once Cora found the crack in her defenses, she always slipped through it as easy as pie.
Cora cupped Aliceâs cheek and bit gently at her throat. Alice gasped, and spread her legs a little wider so that Cora could step in even closer.
